Halloween Gone Green

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

We had a beautiful princess and a stealthy black ninja at our house. And what was RDW?

Well, despite the four hand-me-down halloween costumes that fit him perfectly, he went as a cute little boy in a cheeky halloween t-shirt because he wanted NOTHING to do with the hot, itchy, scratchy costumes! (and halloween dress-up is not a battle I'm willing to fight)

Being outside of the US can pose definite challenges to the traditional celebration of certain holidays. This year, the challenge presented itself in the form of pumpkin carving. (This is not a new challenge to us -- on Groote Eylandt, Australia the only pumpkins you could buy had a very tough, blue/green skin, and were 3 or 4 inches thick, which makes for EXTREMELY difficult carving!) But this year, although you can buy conveniently skinned and cubed pieces of pumpkin for cooking or roasting, it was COMEPLETELY impossible to purchase whole pumpkins. So we had to be creative......

Here's a hint!!

That's right, we went green and carved WATERMELONS!!!

Although its not exactly traditional, there were lots of advantages to carving watermelons instead of pumpkins: 1. since it is summer here, watermelons are rather inexpensive. 2. As Evee showed in the previous picture, watermelon carving is MUCH tastier! (And the air is filled with a sugary, sweet smell rather than the pungent, foul smell of raw pumpkin.)

3. As Joe and Evee discovered, carving out the flesh of a watermelon is "Easy, Peasy" 4. Not a single person complained about having slimy, sticky pumpkin guts stuck to their hands. (Although I will admit the floor was MUCH stickier post watermelon carving, than post pumkin) So we had a GREAT time carving watermelons -- at least most of us carved. One little person found other ways to amuse himself....

Breaking the Silence

I can't believe its been nearly 4 months since my last posting!! I can't say that I regret my hiatus, because the last 4 months have been packed full with a lot of important fun. But... kids are back in school, and its time for me to get back to my neglected blog. There is no real way to fully report all that we've done the last while, and if I were to try to catch everything up in entirety, I know I'd end up so overwhelmed that I'd probably just give up on the blog altogether. So... I'll give reports of what we're doing now, and as I have a spare moment I'll throw in some "catch-up" posts. It will be out of order, but eventually, I'll get it all in. As you know from my last entry, we went to the States in June for a much needed home-visit. It was FANTASTIC!!! We played, played, played and loved, loved, loved catching up with so much of our family and a few friends (we hope our next Stateside visit will correspond better with friends' schedules so we can see more of you). Because of JW's dad's 75th birthday, we got to see ALL of JW's siblings, and since my youngest sister conveniently timed her wedding, I got to see ALL of my siblings!! What a rare treat! In addition to all the family time, the highlights of the trip included climbing Independence Monument, EW's 5th birthday, RW's 1st birthday, lots of hiking and rock climbing, a quick trip to Utah for Independence day, and an even quicker aniversary trip to Ouray for JW and I. (See the photos below.)

The Journey

After a very BUSY and hectic week of preparation, we began our journey to the States for our home-leave visit. I had developed a sinus infection but thanks to an after-hours clinic doctor who gave me a very effective decongestant and even more effective pain killer, I was optimistic about our trip. Things went smoothly to begin -- RW even went to sleep around the time I hoped he would -- but five hours into the flight, CW woke suddenly to throw-up. And he continued to throw up another 8 or 9 times (I lost exact count after 6) over the next 4 hours, and had a high fever. Between the fever and the energy expended on throwing up, the poor guy was so weak and MISERABLE. When we stopped for the mandatory security check and re-fuel in Dakar, Senegal I wonedered if we needed to have a doctor check CW, but Joe pointed out that we were already halfway done with the 19 hour flight, and it would be far better for a doctor to check him in Washington, DC than in Northern Africa. I agreed, so we just did what we could to help CW be comfortable - which on an airplane, over the Atlantic Ocean, isn't much! About 3 hours from landing, CW was finally able to sip on Ginger Ale without heaving it up again, but was enduring a lot of ear pain. I cannot tell you what I would have traded to have my boy safely down on the ground and in the care of a doctor at that point!!!! I was so worried about him, but also so impressed by how well he was handling it all. Many an adult would have been in tears through the whole experience, but he braved it out with just an occasional tear and a weak "I just want to be in my own bed, mom." (To make the long story at least a little shorter, we were able to get CW checked a couple of hours after landing in Washington, DC, and found that he had a "severe" ear infection in both ears!!! Poor boy!! Luckily we had already planned to stay in DC for a few days, so it gave him a chance to start feeling better before we headed on to Colorado.)

Fortunately, RW faired the journey much better than I had feared, and EW was a STAR traveler, so despite CW's misery, the overall trip actually could have been much worse.

We spent a few days in DC, not seeing enough, but enjoying the company of my sister's family, and JW's cousin. (I'll maybe post some pictures of our visit there, soon.)

And then, it was back onto the airplane to complete our journey to Colorado. However, after a 19 hour flight, everything else seems like cake, and even the 4 hour flight from DC to Denver was a BREEZE! Of course, it did help that RW slept for a good bit and NO ONE was throwing up or feverish.

(As you can guess, the photos were all taken on the DC to Denver portion of our journey. I really should have taken some photos of the bedraggled group from the first bit of travels, but they all looked SO pathetic, that I didn't have the heart to photograph them.) And now (FINALLY), we're here in Colorado and SO happy to have made it!!

Boring aussie news

As I was passing through the airport on my last business trip to Australia I picked up a copy of the leading Aussie paper and it was one boring story after another boring story. Every time I go to Australia I get asked what South Africa is like. I tell them that compared to South Africa, Australia is a very boring country. For proof I would give comparisons of the types of stories in a South African newspaper versus an Australian newspaper. (By the way it is a good thing to have a boring newspaper.) My friend Matt seemed to take exception to this and bought me this copy of the local newspaper just to show me how interesting Australian news can be.

Leverage

I know some parents of littlies make good use of "Santa Clause" when they need a little extra leverage. (A friend of mine even got her thumb-sucking-addict daughter to give up the habit for the little old man.) Unfortunately, as of a few years ago when I was rather offended by all the praise and gratitude showered on "Santa Clause" for the gifts I had so lovingly and painstakingly chosen for my children, I have down-played "Santa Clause" in our household. JW and I now get the gratitude for the cool gifts on Christmas morning, which is nice, but it has left us without that extra tool of leverage. But I have found a new tool.......

BOOTS!!!

EW loves, loves, loves these boots. (As she should since we spent longer shopping for them and paid more than I usually do on footwear for myself.) This is to my advantage! If I need a threat or a bribe, the boots are there... "If you don't do as you have been asked RIGHT NOW, you won't be able to wear your boots to school tomorrow." OR "If you hurry and finish your dinner, you can wear your boots to the meeting tonight." etc... Its GREAT!! She thinks she's winning, because she gets to wear the boots, and I KNOW I'm winning because she is faster to listen and act when I attach the "boot clause" to my request.

So who needs "Santa Clause" when you have the "boot clause"??? Not me! (and not EW, either)

A Tribute to CJW

Our CJW turned 8 a little while ago (Janaury). It was pre-blog, but I'm going to back-track and tell you about it. We had a great time celebrating CW's birthday -- at the rock climbing gym with all his male classmates, and then at home with Grandma and Grandpa. Two days after his bday, he was baptized, and since he doesn't love being the center of attention, he was happy that the Bishop offered for him to be baptized in our backyard swimming pool.

CW made the invite list for his baptism, and kept it a very private affair. The missionaries, his Primary teacher - Sister Rose, a couple of friends from church (The Klintworths, The Cowans and Trust) and Grandma and Grandpa were our guests for the day. Sister Rose has been a great primary teacher to CW. He has quietly adored her, and she him.

Right about the same time as his birthday, CW was chosen as "Star of the Week" for his 2nd Grade class. Each day of the week there was some activity or event to celebrate CW. The last day, we were asked to write a letter that the teacher would read aloud to his class. The following is what we wrote:

Dear CW,

Writing this letter is a bit tricky because we know that you don’t usually like to be the obvious center of attention. So having a letter written all about you, and then read in front of your whole class will be a bit embarrassing for you. But we hope you can deal with the embarrassment okay, because we’d really like to share with your class some of our favorite things about you. You have always been a pleasant and happy boy – even when you were a baby. You share your smile easily and often, and it makes people around you feel happy. In addition to being happy, you are fun. You like to tease and play games, and you find ways to make nearly everything you do, fun. You have a great sense of humor that you know how to use, and you’re always making witty jokes. (Unfortunately your mom is still too serious sometimes, and doesn’t realize you’re making jokes. But keep joking, and maybe soon she’ll get the jokes.)

You have a love for animals and all wild things, and your enthusiasm for wildlife is infectious. Many times when we lived in Australia, you were called “the little Steve Irwin”. You have a talent of being able to make even an earthworm seem like such a cool thing – something so cool, everyone around you would want to inspect it and hold it and protect it. Your enthusiasm and knowledge about wildlife has changed our whole family. We notice cool bugs and animals and if we happen to see an exciting bit of wildlife when you are not with us, we always feel such regret that you didn’t get to enjoy it with us. To go along with your enthusiasm, you have a talent with wild things. You have amazing “catching” skills, and few wild things escape your quick hand. But once you have something in your hands, whether it is a gecko or a dragonfly, it seems to know you are kind, and it will often relax and just let you hold it. We will never forget the “pet gecko” you had in Australia, that you used to carry around everywhere. And when you needed to put him down (to use the toilet or some such thing) it would just wait for you to come back and pick him back up again!

There are so many great things about you, CW, that we could make this letter go on and on and on. But you might be feeling quite uncomfortable by now, so we’ll just tell you that if we had to choose our favorite thing about you, it would be that you are a good friend. In fact, you are a great friend, to ALL people of all ages – Grandmas and Grandpas, Dan, Matt, Kristie, Mom and Dad, your classmates, your cousins, and your sister and baby brother all count you as their friend. You are really good at having a conversation, and you take interest in what people think and say. You are very aware of people around you and are sensitive to their feelings and needs. You make people feel comfortable and accepted and those are talents that not everyone in this world has! We hope that no matter where you may go in this great big world, you will continue to be that kind, enthusiastic, and happy person. And as you do, you will always have friends around you.

CW, we truly think you are a STAR and we love you so much!!!

JW's Comments on SA

One of the peculiar things about South Africa is that you can describe it as being heaven on earth or hell on earth and be totally honest. I would like to give my perspective on some of the negative and positive aspects of South Africa. But first I want to make it known that our decision to stay was not based on not having other options. I like my job. The work is challenging, but not particularly stressful. I get to travel to Singapore and Australia a couple of times a year which makes me feel important. I just recently got back from a trip to Singapore. I got to stay in a 6 star hotel. I had heated mirrors so that they wouldn’t steam up when I showered, the drawers would somehow close automatically if left open, there was a TV in the bathroom mirror, and the shower had so many options I nearly had to call “the butler” just to show me how to turn it on. I wandered around the halls for a while looking for the ice machine. I then realized that such places don’t have public ice machines so I called the front desk. They informed me that the butler had already filled the ice bucket for me. Posh. It is sometimes hard to think about going back to Farmington where my one fringe benefit per year is a new pair of safety boots. There are things that do make me want to go back to Farmington. Crime is one of those things, but crime is random and statistically speaking I am no more or less likely to be hijacked in Johannesburg than I am to be hit by a drunk driver in Farmington. Racism is an issue, but I look at it like this: of voters 92% of African Americans voted for Barak Obama and 90% of Mormons voted for Mitt Romney. Birds of a feather flock together. In South Africa there is even more motivation to socially mingle with your own flock than there is other places because there are 11 official languages. So not only do people who look alike tend to interact more with each other they also speak the same language and share that bond. I can’t say that anyone of the racial or language groups are any more racist than another. I don’t even think they generally hate each other. They just find it easier to mix with their own kind. It makes for a challenging situation for us because we don’t fit into any of the language groups. So while we look like Afrikaners (minus the big Dutch heads and beef filled double chins) we don’t easily fit into that group because there is a culture there that we don’t relate to. The Blacks, Indians and Coloreds also have their own cultures that are distinct. As an outsider I enjoy learning about the differences between peoples, but realize that I will never be one of them. The differences between being a have versus a have not in South Africa is also something interesting to think about. It might be easy to assume that the Whites are the haves and the Black are the have-nots. And it is true that there are very few poverty stricken white people, but there are plenty of non-whites that fall into the haves category. The richest of the rich are typically black because the political system here facilitates that. I find it interesting to analyze why some blacks are ultra rich while others struggle to just get enough to eat. I think there are two main differences; the first is education. The blacks that made the most of their sometimes meager schooling opportunities do well. I have one coworker who tells me that he grew up in a village without electricity or running water. The only thing he owned was a school uniform and sometimes he had to go to school without shoes, but he always worked hard in school, and he later got one of the numerous technical based scholarships available to study engineering. Now he drives a Mercedes to work and I’m quite certain he makes much more than I do. The second key is that in South Africa, English is the language of business. Those who speak good understandable English do better. The Afrikaners under apartheid made sure that their people studied English and now 95% are fluent in English and most of the Afrikaners that struggle financially in the new South Africa are the ones with poor English skills. Another example is last November we took a trip to Durban. Durban has two large ethnic communities the Zulus and Indians. We sat in the aquarium while a number of school groups came by. The Zulu school kids would come by and the teachers would be speaking to them in Zulu while the Indian school kids would come by speaking English. The Indians of South Africa have lost all linguistic ties to India and they speak English as a first language. Both the Indians and Zulus where disadvantage under apartheid. But since apartheid, the Indians have established themselves quickly in the economic system. I have far more Indian coworkers than black coworkers. I think it can in large part be attributed to an English based educational system. Here is my conflict with the haves versus have not debate. If English is the language of business then to solve poverty you need to make sure the masses learn English, but I also believe that language is culture and if you take away a groups language than they will lose their culture. This is apparently an issue in the Indian community. It will be interesting to watch how culture preservation versus poverty elimination plays out. I would also like to give some examples of some of my favorite places in South Africa that I would also consider to be among my favorite places on earth. The Drakensburg Mountains: My Mom’s comment after seeing the Drakensburg for the first time was, “Just when you think you’ve seen every kind of mountain there is.” I think that pretty well sums up the uniqueness of the area. Lesotho: The Mountain Kingdom: In January the family took a little adventure into this primitive area. We slept in rondevals that didn’t have electricity. Corben was a big hit with the locals.

Cape Town: Possibly the most charismatic city on earth. After returning from a visit I told my boss that if they moved the office to Cape Town I’d emigrate.

Game Drives: The amount of animals in the game parks living free of human interference makes you wonder what the world used to be like. The nice thing about a game drive is that the first time you go you get so excited just to see a zebra, but it gets better.

The South African Coast: South Africa has one of the most diverse coasts in the world. From the warm beaches and coral of the Indian Ocean to rocky cliffs at the Cape of Good Hope in the frigid South Atlantic Ocean it is all spectacular, but I don’t recommend trying to go great white shark cage diving on a windy day. We had two very sea sick kids and a few adults that weren’t much better off.

Sometimes I struggled a bit with the idea of staying in South Africa, but most days I turn on the radio and listen to the news about South Africa and find it exciting to live in a country where the future is very much unknown. Will it become like Australia where people generally get along and laws are generally respected or will it become South Zimbabwe. I think it could go either way right now.

Little India

JW was in Singapore this week for some meetings. While he was there he ventured into Little India and picked out a new Sari for EW. She was over the moon when he got home and surprised her with it. She immediately had to put it on and then go put a dot on her forehead -- because after all you just can't wear a Sari without having the beauty dot on your forehead. Our friends came over for dinner that evening and EW had to model her new finery for them. They asked if she liked her new Sari, and her reply (with all the enthusiasm and gusto you can imagine) was, "Yes. I LOVE it!!"

Catching Up

Part of my hesitation with doing a blog is, "Where to start??" Do you just pick a day and go forward from there? Do you pick a particular event? Do you spend months trying to catch up on everything you didn't blog before you started? And then always be months behind?
